from start to sangeet
Your Sangeet is one of the most vibrant, joyous events leading up to your wedding day—filled with music, dance, and unforgettable memories. But how do you go from “I want an amazing Sangeet” to actually making it happen? The Marigold Company’s founder and owner, Vidhi Kshatriya shares insider tips to help you plan your Sangeet from start to finish with creativity, style, and lots of fun!
set your budget
Before diving into any details, nail down the date and budget. The Sangeet typically takes place a few days before the wedding, and having a clear budget will help you make decisions on food, entertainment, and décor.
choose the venue
Pick a location that matches your vision. Whether it’s a grand ballroom, a rooftop terrace, or outdoor lawn, the venue sets the mood for the entire event. Consider the size of your guest list, the vibe you want (traditional v. modern), and what’s practical in terms of space for dancing, dining, and performances. In some cases, couples prefer to host their pre-events, like Haldi and Sangeet at the same venue as their wedding day. Others opt. for a new location to keep each event entirely unique and different. The choice is yours!
Curate your outfit
“Some of the best advice I could give to couples is to start shopping early for your outfits for all events” says Vidhi. Brides often go for a lehenga or saree in bright, bold colors—think reds, pinks, greens, and golds—while grooms can opt for a stylish sherwani or fusion outfit. But don’t forget comfort! You’ll be dancing and moving around a lot, so choose something that’s both stunning and practical. For our brides in heels, don’t forget to pack some heel cushions to keep you comfortable all night long.
Choose your theme
A theme can elevate your Sangeet from a traditional gathering to a one-of-a-kind celebration. Whether it’s Bollywood Glam, Enchanted Garden, or Starry Night, a theme will guide decisions on decor and attire. Your theme should reflect both your personalities and your vision for the event. Once you have a theme, you can get creative with decor, lighting, and even dress codes to enhance the ambiance.
decor and ambiance
Décor brings the theme to life and creates a stunning visual for the event. If possible, invest in versatile statement pieces and lighting. Use uplighting, chandeliers, or hanging lanterns to add elegance and warmth to the space. Focus on one or two statement pieces, like a floral backdrop or a beautifully decorated stage to transform your event space.
For a personalized touch, consider adding a custom welcome sign, family photos, or custom favors for your Sangeet guests!
music and entertainment
Music is the heart of any Sangeet. From choreographed dances to a lively DJ, think about how you want to keep the energy high throughout the night.
“Your Sangeet is a time to celebrate and connect with family,” says Vidhi. “Plan a lineup that balances fun performances with social time. Include a few interactive elements, like a surprise performance or a dance competition for guests.”
Consider hiring a DJ with experience in mixing traditional and modern Indian music, or even live musicians to make the experience unique. Together, we’ll plan the sequence of performances so that each moment feels fresh and exciting.
fusion of families
In some cases, both sides of the couple are familiar with a traditional Sangeet, and ready to celebrate! For our fusion couples, a Sangeet may feel like an entirely new and exciting wedding tradition.
Vidhi shares “For fusion weddings, I highly recommend incorporating elements from the non-South Asian side of the culture to create a truly unique and memorable celebration. For example, in a Mexican-Indian wedding, you could include Mexican-inspired décor or favors to highlight both cultures beautifully.”
capturing the moments
A well-versed photography and videography team is crucial for capturing the energy and emotions of the night. Plan with your photographer to capture key moments, from entrances to performances, so nothing is missed.
“Create a shot list with your photographer to make sure they capture all the must-have moments, from family portraits before the event, to candid dance shots,” Vidhi recommends. As your planner, we’ll assist you in curating this before event day.
With careful planning, your Sangeet can be a beautiful reflection of love, joy, and celebration. It’s a special time for two families to unite and celebrate, so remember to focus on the moments that matter.
