Their Story

Shivaani and Vishaal met on Dil Mil while living 500 miles apart, she in Detroit and he in New York. Texting quickly turned into three-hour phone calls every night. They’d talk from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., then get up at 4 for work and do it all again the next day.

Six weeks in, Vishaal flew to Detroit for their first date, and a few weeks later Shivaani flew to New York. Just over a year after that, on a trip to Maine, a place Shivaani loved, Vishaal proposed on a boat tour off Portland in September 2023.

With her family in Toronto and his in Southern California, they chose California for the celebration and wanted a planner who knew the area. After her first call with Vidhi, Shivaani knew right away: “I think we found our person.”

HALDI

WHAT IS A HALDI?

Haldi is one of the most joyful pre-wedding rituals in a South Asian celebration. Family and close friends take turns spreading a turmeric paste onto the bride and groom to bless them, ward off bad energy, and give them a radiant glow before the wedding day.

For Shivaani and Vishaal, the haldi was held at home, in a backyard transformed with orange and gold sequin drapes, marigold garlands, and a floral arch framing a gold swan swing beneath the palm trees. Vishaal wore a sunny yellow kurta and Shivaani a vibrant orange bandhani saree. Surrounded by their closest family, it was an intimate, laughter-filled start to the weekend.

SANGEET

WHAT IS A SANGEET?

Sangeet means “music,” and the night lives up to its name. It’s the pre-wedding celebration where both families come together for performances, choreographed dances, and a whole lot of fun, often the most high-energy night of the wedding weekend.

For Shivaani and Vishaal, this meant a tropical sangeet overlooking the ocean at Pasea Hotel. Guests were welcomed by a sequin arch and a custom “Welcome to Shivaani and Vishaal’s Sangeet” sign. Inside were jewel-toned velvet lounges, hot pink poufs, teal linens, disco balls, and bold arrangements of anthurium, ginger and red roses. Shivaani wore a fuchsia embroidered lehenga and Vishaal an ivory sherwani, and the night ended on a packed dance floor with friends and family performing for the couple.

CEREMONY

CEREMONY

A traditional South Indian wedding ceremony is rooted in sacred rituals performed before the fire, including the exchange of garlands, offerings for blessings, and vows that join two families for life.

For Shivaani and Vishaal, the ceremony unfolded on the oceanfront lawn at Pasea Hotel, under an ivory draped canopy with the Pacific as the backdrop. Shivaani wore a red-and-gold silk saree with temple jewelry and a sweeping red veil, draped so perfectly by her makeup artist that there wasn’t a single wrinkle all day. Vishaal wore a blush sherwani and safa. They exchanged garlands of white roses, baby’s breath and deep red roses beneath brass temple bells, and their mandap remains one of Vidhi’s all-time favorites, and one of the most-saved on Pinterest.

RECEPTION

RECEPTION

The reception is the grand finale of the wedding weekend: an evening of dinner, toasts and dancing, celebrating the couple’s first night as newlyweds.

For Shivaani and Vishaal, this meant a complete change of mood: a modern, monochromatic ballroom lit by towering crystal candelabras, lush white orchids and roses, and mirrored tables that reflected candlelight across the room. Instead of a traditional buffet, they chose a plated dinner and a live band, a risk that paid off. Guests are still asking who catered. At every seat sat a black favor pouch labeled “The Perfect Blend,” and as Shivaani puts it, “I could not have dreamt of a more beautiful wedding.”
